Abstract
Leadership is one of the most studied topics in the field of organizational behavior. Adding new contents day by day, it is continued to be examined by expressing with new concepts. Leadership is an important issue in every field and it is an important tool in reaching the desired goals in the environments where people cooperate. Assuming that Physical Education and Sports Collage Students will be a physical education teacher, a sports manager or a trainer in the future, while these professions are included in profession groups that lead to a specific group or community and also these are profession groups that leadership characteristics are important. Therefore, in this study, leadership behaviors of these students were investigated.
The sample of this research which is designed as descriptive and quantitative is composed of 293 volunteer students selected through easy sampling method from Department of Physical Education, Coaching and Sports Management Department at Çukurova University. In this study, the leadership traits of the students were examined according to gender, class level, department studied and sport life in terms of understanding and initiating the structure sub-dimensions. The data of this research and were gathered through personal data form and Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) which was constructed by Hemphill and Coons, developed by Halpin and Winer and adapted to Turkish by Önal. Since the data of initiation structure dimension did not have a normal distribution, in statistical analysis Mann Whitney U test was used in Pairwise Comparison, while the Kruskall Wallis was used in comparing more than two. As the data of consideration dimension had a normal distribution, in statistical analysis T- test was used in Pairwise Comparison, while one-side variance analysis (ANOVA) was used in comparing more than two.
According to the findings in consideration dimension, there is a meaningful difference concerning the department studied and sport life. In Initiating Structure, there is a meaningful difference concerning gender, the department studied. As a result, according to our findings, it can be stated that students exhibit leadership behaviors in both dimensions. Examining the effectiveness of the education on leadership may be recommended for further studies.
